WORCESTER - In a sunlit room at the University of Massachusetts
Medical Center in Worcester, 13 women and men sit calmly, their
eyes closed and their bodies relaxed. They have been this way,
quiet and unmoving, for 20 minutes.
Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, seated Buddha-like at the front of the
room, gently calls out various meditation instructions, which sound
airy to the uninitiated.
"Observe the moment."
Pause.
"Be aware of your breathing."
He then rings a pair of turnip-shaped chimes, and eyes begin
to open. Serene faces break into smiles.
