HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- Upriver from Portland, east of Troutdale,
the Columbia River slashes through the Cascade Range, creating an
area known in these parts simply as "the Gorge," a magnificent
stretch of sheer cliffs, waterfalls, forested slopes and rainbows .
