Article: WAYLAND SCHOOL ENDS 'LEVELING' EXPERIMENTS ENGLISH CLASSES RETURN TO MIX OF TOP-, LOWER-LEVEL STUDENTS

WAYLAND - Working on the theory that students on every learning level can grasp English studies without being segregated by ability, the Wayland Middle School has opted to end so-called "leveling" in grades 7 and 8.

Based on the success of a yearlong experiment with seventh graders last school year, those students entering the eighth grade in September will continue to be taught advanced-level English regardless of their aptitude.

Middle school principal Richard Schaye said seventh and eighth graders in the past were separated by ability, or leveled, and taught English according to their learning pace by being grouped in either advanced- or average-level classes.
