To listen to church officials tell it, the manslaughter
conviction of David and Ginger Twitchell has unexpectedly
"revitalized" interest in Christian Science teachings, as measured
by visits to Christian Science reading rooms and telephone requests
for Christian Science practitioners.
But others within the Christian Science family say the church
is in a state of crisis, dwindling in size and divided by doubts
about church leadership and direction. The denomination's recent
$200 million expansion into radio and television broadcasting,
including plans to launch a new 24-hour cable service on top of its
existing money-losing media commitments, has in particular drawn
