Dr. Leonard Laster, the chancellor of the University of
Massachusetts Medical School and one of the highest paid public
officials in the state, has lost his job, according to faculty
sources.
Some say he has been fired; others, who asked not to be
identified, said the decision to terminate Laster's tenure has been
amicable.
Dissension between the chancellor and doctors on the faculty
and staff of the school's affiliated hospital is the basis for the
agreement to remove Laster, said sources close to the university.
At the same time, the trustees named Dr. Aaron Lazare, a
psychiatrist who has served as interim dean for several months, to
the post of dean.
