Satin is sexy in a blond wood boudoir 1937 cigarette smoke Raymond
Chandler kidney-shaped swimming pool bored mistress in white fox-
trimmed robe sort of way. It has been a creature of the night, from
night gowns to ball gowns, from a sturdiness befitting the Blueblood
Ball to the slither of tap pants on a slut-goddess welcoming her
favorite gangster home.
Now, in one of those airy stampedes that are fashion, satin is for
day. Bias-cut skirts, tennis dresses, a black dress that might be a
little black dress in any other fabric, except that satin doesn't do
"little" very well.
Satin clothes are gift wrapping. Sometimes they are jokes, which
is to say they put things in quotation marks ...
