Article: SOCIAL DEMOCRATS MAY PUSH INSTANT GERMAN UNITY

BONN - Signs were mounting yesterday that Social Democrats in the two Germanys -- the second-largest party in both countries -- may push for a unified Germany as early as this week.

Horst Ehmke, deputy chairman of the West German Social Democrats, reportedly suggested that the East German Social Democrats may propose instant unity at a special parliamentary session this week.

Asked by the newspaper Bild whether the East German Social Democrats might make such a move during the session on Wednesday in East Berlin, Ehmke reportedly replied: "I don't know. I don't exclude it."

The Social Democratic parties in both Germanys are in close consultation with each other.
