Article: MICHIGAN HASTILY ENACTS PARENTAL CONSENT ABORTION LAW

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Legislature yesterday approved a vetoproof measure requiring girls 17 and younger to get a parent's consent for abortion.

The first committee hearing started at 9 a.m.; by 1:30 p.m., the bill had cleared the Legislature. The final vote was barely tallied before advocates of legal abortions talked about challenging the parental consent requirement.

That requirement will go into effect 90 days after the last legislative session in December. That means it would take effect about April 1.

Lawmakers passed an identical bill earlier this year, but Gov. James Blanchard vetoed it.
