In the largest patent - nfringement award ever granted -- and
the culmination of a fierce 14-year battle between two corporate
giants -- Polaroid Corp. yesterday was awarded $909.5 million from
Eastman Kodak Co.
The award, levied against Kodak for copying Polaroid's instant
camera technology, is a windfall for Polaroid but far less than the
$12 billion the Cambridge company sought.
The decision caps one of the most closely watched patent cases
in history -- launched after the founder of Polaroid, Edwin H.
Land, pulled apart a new instant camera from archrival Kodak and
immediately recognized his own ideas.
