Here is the breakdown of the number of foreigners in Iraq
and Kuwait as of Oct. 10. Most estimates are based on embassy
registrations.
An undetermined number of US, British, French and West German
citizens are being held in Iraq and Kuwait as human shields around
strategic targets. Others are believed hiding in Kuwait. Some
foreigners, mostly women married to Iraqis or Kuwaitis, have
elected to stay.
According to US State Department figures, more than 900,000
of the estimated three million foreigners in Kuwait and Iraq on
Aug. 2, when Iraqi forces overran Kuwait, have left.
