"Soak the rich."
"Let the rich pay."
So ran the dialogue last week as Congress' tax deliberations
provoked the patrons of a thousand barbershops and taverns to
mutterings of class war, American-style.
But there was a problem.
Nobody knew -- exactly -- who "the rich" were, or what they
thought of them.
True, everybody had an opinion. And yes, the admiration,
observation and contemplation of the rich persists as perhaps the
central obsession of a society utterly entranced by television
shows like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," magazines like
Vanity Fair, and figures like the Claus von Bulow of the new movie
"Reversal of Fortune."
