As educators across the nation worry that American
youngsters are not learning as much as their counterparts in other
countries, a Massachusetts legislator has proposed a plan to
lengthen the school year, claiming that only a longer session can
improve the lagging academic performance in the nation's schools.
"We are being pummeled by countries in Europe and Asia where
children spend more time learning than American kids do," said
state Sen. Michael Barrett D-Cambridge, a member of the
Legislature's Joint Education Committee who plans to submit a bill
lengthening the school year from 180 days to 220 days. "Yet people
