The dawning of a new year always brings not only soul-searching but crystal-ball gazing. So the waning hours of New Year's Eve were especially expectant at Back Bay Bistro, planning a phoenix-like transformation into what its owner Frank Bell hopes will be a '90s happening. After a month's remodeling, the restaurant will reopen as Small Planet with a new menu and a new look.

New Year's Eve, a big night for any restaurant, was a nostalgic one as Bell greeted patrons, thanked them for 10 years in business and explained the coming changes to longtime regulars as well as newcomers. A peasant cuisine is planned, he said, a simpler style, a new decor.
