MIAMI BEACH -- Originally from Lisbon Falls, Maine, Phil Roy
settled in Miami Beach in 1976, more or less accidently. "I was on
vacation and saw a sign that said `Miami Beach Next Left' and just
followed it," he recalls, "And I'm still here."
Today, as senior desk clerk at the Winterhaven, a small hotel on
Ocean Drive in the heart of South Miami Beach's Art Deco District,
Roy frequently uses the French he learned growing up in a New England
mill town with a large French-Canadian population. Also, the
smattering of German picked up during a stint with the US Army in
Europe and the fairly fluent Spanish acquired after 16 years of
