Anyone deciding to venture into the New Yorker's 70th anniversary
issue, and thereby ponder the evolution of the Great American
Magazine, should first turn to page 52. There one finds an
advertisement for a compact disc called "Fortress," on which the
London Symphony Orchestra "performs the music of Sting."
This self-congratulatory issue brings a few worthwhile pieces --
and one that is a genuine keeper. But somehow the mind, in attempting
to figure out what the current incarnation of the New Yorker is all
about, keeps returning to that ad.
The New Yorker is the fortress of 20th-century American letters.
Its drawbridge has opened for only the choice few, among them all
those marquee names ...
