EVE, DONNA AND MEGAN are cooking dinner, and the whole house
smells of it: basmati rice made yellow by the turmeric seasoning,
mixed with sliced cashews, lemon juice, parsley and yellow mustard
seeds that turned gray and popped like corn when they were fried,
along with spinach and onions sauteed in olive oil -- a Lord Krishna
recipe. Playing loudly is the gravel-voiced Tom Waits, whose tunes
honor the lives of truck drivers and waitresses, bums, boozers and
barflies, lonely men, lost ladies.
"Tom Waits rules the planet," Donna says.
