Article: New handicap procedure is definitely in the cards

Despite more than 2,000 calls protesting the new Equitable Stroke Control procedure, the US Golf Association will continue with its controversial handicap system through 1993.

USGA director of handicapping Dean Knuth unveiled the ESC procedure yesterday at the Massachusetts Golf Association's annual spring conference at the Newton Marriott. Knuth said the old handicap procedure "might have been more accurate, but the new system is simpler to understand."

Ten weeks ago, the USGA introduced the ESC procedure in Florida. The waves of discontent are still rolling in at the USGA's offices in Far Hills, N.J.
