Mayor of Boston -- in the eyes of the many people running for the job, considering running or wishing they had the chance to run -- is one of the last great political offices in America.

In an age of crippling trade-offs in public life, and with increasing numbers of politicians opting for the security of the private sector, a chance to be Boston's mayor still ignites the fire in political bellies.

Four candidates are already running and a half-dozen or so are on the fence. Less than two weeks after Mayor Flynn was nominated to be US ambassador to the Vatican, Boston voters are already assured of a full ballot of choices in the fall.
