Kevin White sits by the window at the Ritz, and the waiters compete to bring him coffee. Their attentiveness aside, he enjoys relative anonymity; he is looking out to Newbury Street, which is just beginning to stir with life. He seems to be peering at the new Armani store, a feature distinctly absent from the Boston he knew while mayor from 1968 to 1984.

White is mostly an observer these days. For almost a decade, he has been a member of the faculty at Boston University, teaching a course in politics, public policy and the media, and from all outward signs he has enjoyed it immensely.
