For Boston's health care industry, the future has already arrived.

Even as they wait nervously for President Clinton's reform plan, due next month, the city's big hospitals are hunkering down and cutting back, getting ready for a world that won't be as bountiful as the one they are used to.

In the past few weeks, the hospitals have announced layoffs and the closing of units. Four of the major teaching hospitals have postponed or slowed construction of new facilities while they figure out which way the world is headed.
