Article: End is near for Berlin's American era

BERLIN -- The Burger King has reduced its hours and the video store, with its generous supply of action films and dirty movies, is closing down next month.

Only a handful of babies is expected at the American Army Hospital this year. And someday soon, the special television channel, with its 24-hour schedule of "L.A. Law," "The Simpsons" and the NBA basketball playoffs, will shut down.

After 48 years of defending the ramparts of freedom, the US Army is leaving Berlin.

As the US military across Europe trims down its forces from a high of 325,000 soldiers in the 1980s to less than 100,000 by 1996,
