The Cambridge City Council is scheduled to vote tonight on whether to sell to Stop & Shop -- for a reported price of $1 million -- the short stretch of Riverside Street that it needs to build a super-supermarket to replace its aging market on Memorial Drive.

The issue has aroused considerable controversy in the Cambridgeport neighborhood, where support for a larger and improved market is offset by concerns about the heavy traffic impact -- both 18-wheeler delivery trucks (perhaps exiting onto Memorial Drive) and an estimated 700,000 more customer trips a year -- the market could have.

The old market almost did not survive the 1970s.
