EAST BOSTON -- As the students traipsed through the knee-high
grasses, scooping up pails full of minnows, snails, crabs and other
aquatic life and taking advantage of the chance to get really muddy
for a change, a commercial airplane roared by, dwarfing the Boston
skyline in the distance.
Not an unusual sight if you're at the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation
-- 251 acres of unadulterated nature surrounded by Logan Airport,
Suffolk Downs Racetrack, East Boston's Orient Heights, Revere and
Winthrop. A full 150 acres of the salt marsh lie within Boston city
limits, in East Boston, and are under the control of the Metropolitan
District Commission.
