QUINCY -- In nine-plus months living on Independence Avenue in
this City of Presidents, I had visited the local 7-Eleven about 60
times, the Adams Cleaners about 20 times, the Golden Bowl exactly
once, the side-by-side saltbox homes where John Adams and John Quincy
Adams were born not at all. There they were: the birthplaces of two
US presidents a mere 75 feet apart, a pair of historical treasures
right down the street from my apartment, and I had bypassed them for
a Chinese restaurant that served French bread.
Last Sunday I finally checked out those mysterious colonials
across the street from Sweeney's Funeral Home. In fact, I checked
