French choreographer Roland Petit is not entirely happy with
"Chaplin Dances," the English title of his ballet featuring the great
tragicomedianCharlie Chaplin as its main character and subject.
He strongly prefers the original French "Charlot Danse Avec Nous,"
which translates to "Charlie, Dance With Us." Petit likes the less
pretentious, more casual tone of the French title, particularly its
reference to "Charlot" ("Charlie") rather than Chaplin.
"The Chaplin I truly adore," says Petit, referring to his friend
of many years, "is the hapless Charlie, the mustachioed tramp of the
earlier films. . . . I had nothing to do with the English title, and
I didn't have the strength to fight for ...
