When this survey was being taken, the Red Sox were in Milwaukee
and off to a feeble start on their road trip with two losses in a
row. They came back to win the next two games of the series.
Meanwhile, their fans back home were split roughly 50-50 on the Sox'
chances of winning the American League pennant. A slight majority of
the 873 callers felt the team did not have the on-field goods to win
a pennant. But many respondents, their hearts beating with hope,
gave the Hose a shot at taking the measure of their rivals in the AL
East. Said one: "They have to bring home the pennant this year. My
father's already 81 and I don't know how much longer he can wait
before they do it."
