The political powerhouse of West Roxbury is emerging as a critical battleground in the race for mayor this year because while it boasts more voters than any other ward in the city, it lacks a home-grown candidate to back in this campaign.

Last Friday night, a waving Suffolk County Sheriff Robert C. Rufo stood sentry on a Centre Street corner in West Roxbury, even though a significant percentage of the neighborhood's' residents had headed south to Cape beaches.
