The political powerhouse of West Roxbury is emerging as a critical
battleground in the race for mayor this year because while it boasts
more voters than any other ward in the city, it lacks a home-grown
candidate to back in this campaign.
Last Friday night, a waving Suffolk County Sheriff Robert C. Rufo
stood sentry on a Centre Street corner in West Roxbury, even though a
significant percentage of the neighborhood's' residents had headed
south to Cape beaches.
On the last lazy weekend in July, Rufo and the other leading
mayoral hopefuls were aggressively courting the sophisticated West
Roxbury electorate with door-to-door appeals, house parties,
midsummer literature drops, and streetcorner ...
