Premier Li Peng told the opening session of the National People's
Congress today that the government this year will try to rein in
economic growth, tame "excessive" inflation, overhaul money-losing
state enterprises and fight corruption.
Li was relatively frank by Chinese political standards,
acknowledging that the government had failed to curb the abuse of
power by many officials and made "mistakes" that contributed to last
year's 21.7 percent inflation rate.
But the Chinese premier, who signed the martial law order that led
to the bloody 1989 crackdown on democracy demonstrators, was silent
