WASHINGTON -- Near the end of a stretch run in a busy
congressional session, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy appeared on something
of an emotional roller-coaster yesterday, his reactions ranging from
a display of sympathy for a young witness to an angry defense of a
colleague.
In a morning hearing on Lyme disease, Kennedy's eyes moistened
as he listened to 14-year-old Evan White, who suffers from Lyme
disease and who could hardly speak from his wheelchair.
Kennedy's voice trembled when he complimented the youngster on
his testimony, telling him that "of all the testimony today, those
few words of yours will be the most powerful words."
