As Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire," Rena Cherry Brown
wears her thick red hair braided and pulled back, but, like Blanche's
sensuality, it keeps threatening to slip loose. However demurely
Blanche behaves, that hair tells another story, and when late in the
play it cascades around her shoulders, it signals her fulfillment and
doom.
The Washington Shakespeare Company production of Tennessee
Williams's classic, which opened Saturday night, is full of this kind
of rich theatricality. It's not a masterly, knock-you-dead production
of a masterpiece -- like, say, the recent "Long Day's Journey Into
