The intriguing thing about the ruggedly terraced, naturalistic
lion habitat at the National Zoo is that, as you walk up to it, you
immediately feel you are entering the animals' landscape -- becoming
a part of their domain.
It's a thrill.
So much so that, when "The Lion King" premiered in Washington last
summer, the gala marking the event was held at the zoo. Guests,
cocktails in hand, could stroll up and view the beasts as if they
were somehow just another part of the great cartoonish landscape of
Hollywood and Washington.
Indeed, as you stand there looking into the lion pit from the low
concrete guard wall a mere 3 1/2 feet high, you can find yourself
virtually eyeball-to-eyeball with the ...
