NEWTON -- For this suburban neighborhood, the living room in this
89-year-old Dutch Colonial house was small, about 12 by 15 with a bay
window that extended it another 3 feet. A previous owner had
stripped the white paint off the mantelpiece and bookshelves flanking
the fireplace and stained the wood mahagony. This "dark brown gash,"
as an interior designer was to call it, didn't help matters. But the
chief fault of the room, said the owners, was atmospheric. Although
it was painted a creamy yellow, it lacked warmth and welcome, and as
proof of that the children wouldn't play there and the dog kept her
distance.
Three Boston-area decorators took up the challenge to do the
