SADDLE BROOK, N.J. -- Republican consultant Ed Rollins, all but ostracized by his party when he briefly went to work for independent presidential candidate Ross Perot last year, has regained his political footing after helping New Jersey Republican Christine Todd Whitman win the governor's race last week.

Rollins, 50, whose previous exploits earned him the enmity of political heavyweights from Perot to President George Bush, is proving to be a scrappy survivor -- with his instinct for the jugular intact.
