In an attempt to stake out early differences with US Sen. Edward
M. Kennedy, former radio host Janet Jeghelian's campaign has seized
on the issues of crime and foreign policy.
Following up on statements Jeghelian, a Republican, made in
announcing her candidacy on Tuesday, campaign manager Gene Hartigan
yesterday said Kennedy had revealed his softness on crime by opposing
a measure to make it harder for judges to order the early release of
prison inmates.
That legislation stipulates that federal judges could no longer
release inmates prematurely by making a general finding that prison
crowding creates a condition of cruel and unusual punishment at a
facility.
