Flamboyant hippie blues queen Janis Joplin has finally gotten the
boxed set treatment -- and the result is sheer pleasure for those who
knew and loved her music. The three-CD set, "Janis," not only shows
why she was the acknowledged diva of deep-throated blues, but also
why she was such a lovable eccentric who pushed every boundary
possible.
"I never hold back, man. I'm always on the outer edge of
probability," she told her sister, Laura, who wrote a fine
biography, "Love, Janis." The quote is reprinted in a booklet in the
boxed set, though booklet author Ann Powers makes a foolish stretch
in saying Madonna was the "triumphant sequel" to Joplin. Let's face
