In Chile, where it is summer, celebrants head to the beach for a
huge fete. The holiday is a time for people to reconnect with those
who have touched their lives in the past year -- their family, their
neighbors, their doctor, their priest. Revelers go from house to
house, drinking ponche -- wine with cocktail fruit -- and sampling an
array of appetizers. The party usually lasts until breakfast.

In Brazil, the celebration has roots in African religions such as
Umbanga and Camddomble. Dressed in white, celebrants light candles
