Kathleen Battle, like Kiri Te Kanawa, has built a reputation as an
escapist singer. Everything in her musical world is attractive,
manageable, delightful, whether the composers and poets thought of it
that way or not. FM stations that won't broadcast vocal music make
an exception for Battle, because nothing ruffles the serene and
