Article: Rubella outbreak tracked 34 cases seen as disease spreads from jailed, homeless

At least 34 cases of rubella, or German measles, have been confirmed in an unusual outbreak that started among prisoners and homeless people in the Boston area and is beginning to infect people with no documented exposure to these populations, state officials said yesterday.

In addition to the confirmed cases -- 15 in Boston and 19 in surrounding areas -- another 16 cases are pending confirmation, said Dr. Alfred DeMaria, director of communicable diseases for the state Department of Public Health.
