The news about the director's cut of "A Streetcar Named Desire" at
the Brattle Theatre is that four minutes have been restored to Elia
Kazan's 1951 film. We now see a stronger reference to the
homosexuality of Blanche Du Bois' young husband who committed
suicide, more reaction shots amplifying the sexual tensions between
Blanche and Stanley Kowalski, and a closeup of pregnant Stella
returning to Stanley after being slapped around by him. Some pretty
big pieces of censorship still remain, of course, especially at the
end, when Stella is made to seem to leave Stanley after the birth of
