The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a public charity that solicits millions of dollars in contributions each year, has come under fire by some critics for allegedly turning its back on pet owners unable to pay for medical help for their animals. While some pets are refused treatment because of an owner's inability to pay, the tax-exempt, nonprofit society boasts assets of $60 million. In 1992, the group reported $6.6 million in public donations.
