HAMAR, Norway -- They played "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the
awards ceremony at the Viking Ship again yesterday. And the one
leading the song, the greatest US Olympic woman athlete of all time,
had misty eyes by the time " . . . and the home of the brave" rolled
around.
You'll have to excuse Bonnie Blair's emotion. She stepped up to
an Olympic gold-medal podium for the fifth time yesterday, surpassing
luminaries Evelyn Ashford, Pat McCormick and Janet Evans in the
process, but what made this one so poignant is that it will be her
last Olympic moment.
Blair, 29, had just raced the 1,000 meters in 1 minute 18.74
seconds, 1.38 seconds faster than surprise silver medalist Anke Baier
