Having dedicated its season to the late Thomas P. (Tip) O'Neill
Jr., North Cambridge Catholic already had enough reason to succeed in
the postseason. The team gained added incentive when coach Frank
McGrail announced before a recent practice that he was retiring after
this season.
The players wear black mourning patches in honor of O'Neill, who
died last month. O'Neill was a Cambridge native who often donated
money to the North Cambridge Catholic program.
"There was never any fanfare about it. He just did it," said
McGrail, who graduated in 1952 from St. John's, which later became
North Cambridge Catholic. O'Neill also attended St. John's.
