Eight months before the state election, the contentious issue of
funding fertility drugs for poor women has already divided candidates
for governor and US Senate.
Two Democratic gubernatorial candidates disagree with Gov. Weld's
ban on fertility treatments to women on Medicaid, including welfare
recipients. However, the step taken by Weld won praise from three
Republicans who hope to unseat Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
Kennedy did not return phone calls seeking comment on Weld's
action.
Last week, under pressure from two GOP lawmakers and in a
political climate resounding with calls for welfare reform, Weld
decided to terminate Medicaid coverage for fertility drugs. Medicaid
