A woman wearing a red parka and a sad face sat on a bench outside the room where her 17-year-old grandson was being arraigned on a gun charge the other day in Dorchester District Court. She gave her name as Lenette Thompson and said she was there to support the boy due to a promise she made to her daughter, the kid's mother.

"Is your daughter here today?" she was asked.

"No, she's not," Lenette Thompson replied.

"Where is she?"
