A woman wearing a red parka and a sad face sat on a bench outside
the room where her 17-year-old grandson was being arraigned on a gun
charge the other day in Dorchester District Court. She gave her name
as Lenette Thompson and said she was there to support the boy due to
a promise she made to her daughter, the kid's mother.
"Is your daughter here today?" she was asked.
"No, she's not," Lenette Thompson replied.
"Where is she?"
"She's dead."
Mrs. Thompson spoke slowly, softly and with great dignity. She
said her daughter died six years ago because of crack. She said her
daughter would do anything to get the drug and did exactly that --
