Apparently, Holy Bull did flip his palate in the Fountain of
Youth. How else can you explain his turnaround from being eased
under the wire in that Feb. 19 event to Saturday's scintillating
triumph in the $500,000 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park?
Off as the 6-5 favorite in the Fountain of Youth, the
then-undefeated Holy Bull was vying for the lead with Halo's Image
when he stopped on the far turn as if he had been hit by a baseball
bat. He began throwing his head around, and jockey Mike Smith felt
he had bled. But an examination showed that Holy Bull did not bleed
and veteran trainer Jimmy Croll said he suspected that Holy Bull had
flipped his palate, which temporarily blocks a horse's ...
