Milton Stanley Graton of Ashland, N.H., "the last of the covered
bridge builders," died Tuesday in Spear Hospital in Plymouth, N.H.
He was 85.
For nearly four decades, Mr. Graton built bridges the
old-fashioned way, using traditional methods and only products that
originate in the woods. As CBS newsman Charles Kuralt said in a
memorable TV profile, "In an age when we do many things fast and
wrong, Milton Graton still does things slowly and right."
Born in Hebron, Conn., Mr. Graton had resided in Ashland, N.H.,
for many years. A laconic man with piercing blue eyes, he often
marveled at the crafsmanship of New Hampshire's covered bridges.
