The brochures, advertisements and unsolicited catalogues deposited
in your mailbox are not as worthless as you might think. Many of
those items are products of a $4.5 billion regional printing industry
that employs 70,000 people in the District, Maryland and Virginia.
The same goes for many national news and specialty magazines,
books, newsletters -- even some computer discs. The published works
flow from many small print shops and a few larger companies that,
collectively, are big-time players in the local and regional
