At: Symphony Hall, last night.
Of all the Boston Symphony Orchestra's guest conductors, Roger
Norrington is the best sport. Over the years of his association with
the orchestra, he has willingly taken on some "duty" performances,
sometimes in emergencies. The way to discharge a duty, my
grandmother used to say, is to take it up with joy, and then it
becomes something else. Norrington's duty performances have proved
how right my grandmother was.
Jan. 20 marked the 100th birthday of Walter Piston, not the most
famous American composer identified with the BSO, but the one with
the longest association -- during the course of 44 ...
