A stubborn outbreak of rubella, or German measles, that began in
December in jails and homeless shelters has spread to Logan Airport
and the Latino community of East Boston, prompting health officials
to step up immunization campaigns to protect vulnerable women of
child-bearing age.
Since December, 88 cases have been confirmed in northeastern
Massachusetts. Officials said that routine immunization has reduced
rubella to less than 20 cases in most years.
Although symptoms of the disease generally are mild, a rubella
infection early in pregnancy creates a high risk of miscarriage,
stillbirth or severe birth defects including retardation, deafness
and malformed heart.
