Article: State's lead poisoning cases up 16% Numbers boosted by stricter standards

State public health statistics reviewed by the Globe show that
cases of lead poisoning among children increased 16 percent statewide
last year, due in part to a tightening of standards for lead
poisoning.
The numbers also show that while lead remains a problem largely
afflicting youngsters in cities with older housing stock, it is also
a reality for families in smaller towns and suburbs.
While children in cities such as Boston, Brockton, Springfield and
Lawrence suffered from lead poisoning in far greater numbers,
communities such as Braintree, Brookline, Lexington and Milton each
had one child diagnosed with lead poisoning in fiscal 1993, the last
